Aging-in-place bathroom remodel Folsom
Llewelyn
Project Overview
Build Type: Aging-in-Place Primary Bathroom Remodel
Completion: 2025
Project Cost Range: $150,000 – $200,000
Design Partner: Jennifer Ramsey Interiors
For more than 30 years, this Folsom home on Llewelyn was where our client raised her family. The kids grew up here, the memories piled up, and leaving was never part of the plan. But as she and her husband grew older, health challenges arrived, and the house that had served them so well started working against them.
Nowhere was that clearer than the primary bathroom. It was dated, but the bigger problem was safety. A curbed shower, tight clearances, and nothing to hold onto turned a daily routine into a daily risk. The couple faced the question so many longtime homeowners eventually face: move, or make the home fit the next chapter?
Our Approach
They chose to stay, and our job was to make that choice a lasting one. Working alongside Jennifer Ramsey Interiors, we set out to solve three goals at once: a bathroom that looked beautiful, functioned better, and was safe and accessible for years to come.
The guiding principle was simple. Every accessibility feature had to earn its place without making the room feel clinical. Rather than bolting safety onto a standard layout, we designed the space around how the couple actually moves through their day, from bathing to dressing, and let the finishes do the rest.
Transformation Highlights
Every detail in this Folsom aging-in-place remodel was designed to make daily life safer and easier, without looking like it. A few of our favorite features:
Recessed Curbless Shower
We recessed the floor so the shower sits flush with the rest of the bathroom. No curb to step over means no trip hazard, and room for a walker or wheelchair if it's ever needed.
Dressing Bench Built into the Cabinetry
A seated area integrated into the vanity cabinetry gives a stable, convenient place to dress, blending seamlessly into the design.
Spacious Toilet Area with Comfort-Height Seat
The toilet area was given generous width for easy maneuvering, paired with a tall seat that makes sitting and standing far less strain.
Anodized Black Grab Bars That Double as Towel Bars
Anodized black grab bars are placed exactly where support is needed and double as towel bars. They read as polished hardware, not medical equipment.
Built-In Shower Bench with Handheld Shower
A large bench with a handheld shower within easy reach lets the couple bathe seated, safely and comfortably.
The REsult
Remodeling is a real investment, and this one was no exception. But for this family, the value of staying in the home where they raised their children, close to their neighbors, routines, and memories, far outweighed the cost. Today the primary bathroom is a calm, elegant retreat that also happens to be one of the safest rooms in the house.
Llewelyn shows what's possible when aging in place is planned with care: accessibility built into the design rather than added on top of it. For homeowners in Folsom, El Dorado Hills, Granite Bay, and the greater Sacramento region who want to stay in the home they love, it's proof that a safer house doesn't have to look like a hospital. It can feel more like home than ever.
